Show Information for the Thunder on the Rio Grande Air Show
When?
Saturday, May 30th – Sunday, May 31st, 2009.
Doors open at 9:00am and close at 6:00pm on both days.
Air Show is from 11:00am – 4:00pm on both days.
THERE IS NO RE-ENTRY FOR THIS EVENT
What?
There will be air show performances and static displays of planes as well as several exhibits and venders. A children’s area will also be available.
How much? Ticket Prices are as follows:
Adult: $10.00 The day of the show $15.00
Military/Senior: $8.00 The day of the show $10.00
(Each Adult, Military, Senior ticket will come with 1 free child ticket.)
Children 10 & under $4.00 The day of the show $5.00
Tickets are currently on sale and are available through the Pan Am box office and through all Ticketmaster outlets.There is NO RE-ENTRY for this event.
Where to park?
There will be parking at the airport with shuttles to transport guests from their car to the entrances. Parking will be FREE. There will be handicap parking located with the VIP Parking.
Parking lots should be used for parking only. No tailgating, alcoholic beverages, picnicking, cooking/barbequing, camping or loitering in the parking lot area will be tolerated.
Will there be food?
Yes, there will be food such as Brisket, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, etc. offered at 5 main locations. Crosswinds, a restaurant that is located at the airport, will be providing the food for guests and staff. There may possibly be other vendors there for smaller snack like food.
What if I get hurt?
First aid will be offered at the airport by Emergency Medical Technicians. There will also be an ambulance on stand-by there at the airport.
Who will be performing? Performers are always subject to change. As of today, performers include but are not limited to:
Dan Buchanan, Bob Carlton, Indy Boys, Melissa Aerobatics, Viper West F-16, Tim Decker, Franklin’s Flying Circus.
Hugh Oldham will be the air show announcer and George Cline will be the Air Boss.
We will also be having many exhibits in the Static Display Area.
Can I volunteer for the air show?
If you would like to volunteer at the Thunder on the Rio Grande Air Show please do one of the following:
As a THUNDER volunteer one will receive an Air Show t-shirt, free parking, food/beverages, a post event get together and two complimentary event tickets. Each volunteer must attend 2 of 3 orientations and work a minimum of 2 4-hour shifts.
What can I bring into the Air Show?
What IS allowed? Visitors are limited to the following items, which will be SUBJECT TO SEARCH:
- Small purses or fanny packs
- Cameras and/or camcorders with “small” camera bags (professional cameras/video are allowed)
- Diaper bags
- Baby strollers
- “Small” Lawn chairs only. NOTE: the chairs must be out of carrying cases and bags when proceeding through security. Bags may only be used for chairs
- Wheelchairs, canes, guide/working animals (to assist handicapped)
- Water in clear plastic bottles only (no other liquids or storage containers will be allowed)
- Blankets
- Umbrellas
What IS NOT allowed?
- Coolers (includes food and beverage, with the exception of baby food/beverages)
- Grills
- Fireworks
- Weapons of any description (includes all fixed-blade knives, folding knives longer that 3”, projectiles, Leatherman tools, guns, brass knuckles, numchucks, nightsticks, batons, and baseball bats)
- Mace, pepper spray, and tasers
- Scanners
- Glass containers
- Pets (except service animals assisting those with disabilities)
- Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, roller blades or roller skates
- No alcohol or illegal drugs
- Excessive storage items such as briefcases, duffel bags and large camera bags
- NO GLASS CONTAINERS ON THE FLIGHT LINE

MORE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
- Is each ticket good for one day? Yes, each ticket will only be good for one admittance into the show on one of the two days.
- Are credit cards accepted at the gate? At exhibits/ vendors? We plan to have a credit card machine at the gates to purchase tickets; however, most exhibits/vendors will not have a credit card machine. We encourage you to bring cash to the event.
- Will there be an ATM available? Most likely there will not be an ATM available. We encourage you to bring cash to the event.
- How much is parking? It is free. There will be shuttles to take guests from their cars to the entrances.
- Can I leave and re-enter the Air Show? No. There is no re-entry for this event.
- Are there Military and Senior Discounts? Yes. Military and senior tickets are $8 prior and $10 the day of the show.
- What are the conditions for Media? There will be a press day on Friday May 29th. To get a pass into this event please contact Bobbie Welch at 575-646-7525. This event is for press/media only and is not open to the public. You must present your media pass on Saturday and Sunday to have free admittance into the event.
- How do I get a Press or Media credential? All media pass information and requisitions should be directed to Bobbie Welch at 575-646-7525. Please have all requests for media passes into Bobbie by Friday, May 15th (two weeks prior to the show). You must present your media pass on Saturday and Sunday to have free admittance into the event.
- Will there be any bleacher seating? There will be very limited provided seating; however, we encourage you to bring lawn chairs as well as blankets to sit on. “Small” Lawn chairs will be allowed only. NOTE: the chairs must be out of carrying cases and bags when proceeding through security. Bags may only be used for chairs.
- Will there be food and gift vendors at the Air Show? Yes. There will be both located throughout the area.
- Is there shade? A misting tent will be available. Guests are encouraged to bring umbrellas.
- What happens if there is inclement weather? The situation would differ based on what kind of inclement weather. If it was just windy there would most likely not be a problem. If there was a thunderstorm it would probably only delay the air displays. In both cases the exhibits would stay open.
- Are pets allowed? No. Only service animals are allowed.
- Are cameras allowed? Yes. Cameras with small camera bags are allowed.
